Permanent Residency
Aliens, both inside and outside the United States, may be eligible to obtain permanent residency and become what is known as a Lawful Permanent Resident (LPR). There are three ways in which to obtain permanent residency and an alien registration card (once referred to as a “green card”). The three ways are via a family member, employment, or the diversity lottery. Eligible aliens who are currently in the U.S. go through a process called adjustment of status to receive their permanent residency. Eligible aliens residing outside the U.S. undergo consular processing for permanent residency.
